The National Range and Pasture Handbook provide procedures in support of NRCS policy for the inventory, analysis, treatment, and management of grazing land resources. Inventory and monitoring have always been central themes of rangeland management, as tools to assist in making wise decisions according to the productive potential of the land resource, such as, carrying capacity, utilization levels, grazing systems, and range improvements.

Rangeland inventory – a descriptive list of land, vegetation, infrastructure, and livestock resources for a particular pasture or ranch; provides accurate representation of existing conditions. Rangeland monitoring- a systematic approach to evaluate responses to management actions over Size: 4MB.

The Rangeland Inventory, Monitoring, and Evaluation report contains 7 tables and has undergone various modifications in content over the years. Table 1 and table 2 report on inventories of vegetation on Bureau of Land Management rangelands.

Table 3 reports on the monitoring of trend (the change over time) in vegetation on Bureau of Land. Methods for inventory and monitoring of vegetation, litter, and soil surface condition. Extensive areas are often covered in range inventory or monitoring programs, making it impractical to count every plant or to traverse every meter of land.

Therefore, a sampleis collected to obtain a subset of data that is assumed to represent the entire site, or Rangeland inventory & monitoring book. The inventory and monitoring section describes meth-ods of determining production, composition, and uti-lization.

The evaluating and rating of ecological sites section gives procedures for determining trend and similarity index and evaluating rangeland health attri-butes on rangelands and forage value ratings on grazed forest Size: 1MB.

The book's findings and recommendations are of interest to the public; scientists; ranchers; and local, state, and federal policymakers.

Rangeland Inventory and Monitoring: Supplemental Studies. This Technical Reference contains the rangeland inventory and monitoring techniques historically used in the Bureau since the formation of the Grazing Service; It does not include local or regional techniques. Where manuals could not be located, the best available documentation was used.

These agencies have manuals and handbooks that establish accepted procedures for inventory and monitoring of rangelands as well as the process for developing, implementing, and establishing compliance with rangeland management plans. Desertification has occurred worldwide.

The biophysical and socio-economic complexity of this phenomenon has challenged our ability to categorize, inventory, monitor and repair the condition of degraded lands. One of the most important distinctions to be made in relation to land degradation is between cultivated land used for annual crop production and `rangelands'.Reviews: 1.

Rangeland inventory and monitoring have been transformed during the past 10 years by four major innovations. 1 The first innovation is the standardization of functional indicators of land health associated with the adoption of standard methods.

A national system to inventory and monitor rangelands should be based on the collection and analysis of data on changes in a minimum set of multiple indicators of rangeland health.

Rangelands are diverse, and large amounts of data are needed for all range management activities. The concept of rangeland health has become the preferred alternative to range condition. This concept is currently used by most range professionals as a basis for inventory and assessment.

Rangeland evaluation is the process of determining the status of natural rangeland resources. Historically, data describing vegetation attributes is collected by sampling in an inventory and monitoring program. From this information, the status of rangeland vegetation can be rated.

In this protocol, evaluators assess three ecosystem attributes by rating 17 indicators tied to the attributes. These rangelands are by no means adequately inventoried and while some aspects of range evaluation are widely practised (eg.

carrying capacity estimation) the development of techniques for assessing and monitoring grazing impact is still at an early stage.
